A Counselor’s Reading List

I was asked by a colleague of a client today … a Public Affairs professional who’s ramping up his level of work and counsel … what books I might suggest to someone looking to elevate their advisor game. Here’s what I rattled off, some of which we’ve posted about in the past, and some of which is new. It’s just my take, but I think each book helps an advisor to leaders better understand communication, organizational dynamics, and the profession of offering counsel. Here’s the list:

* Buck Up Suck Up, James Carville & Paul Begala: Rules from the war room; read our take here.

* Credibility, Kouzes & Posner: The art and practice of personal credibility … required reading for leaders.

* Eyewitness To Power, David Gergen: A fascinating first-person account of five presidential administrations … and an excellent primer on the art of campaign communications and organizational politics. Read our take here.

* The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell; Gladwell makes accessible—and entertaining—50 years of research regarding the spread of ideas (aka, “the Diffusion of Innovations”).

* The Trusted Advisor, David Maister: Consultant-to-consultants David Maister’s take on building advisory relationships of credibility, responsiveness, affinity, and appropriate motivation with clients and counterparties.

* True Professionalism, David Maister: Maister’s take on the art of acting as a service professional—especially useful for folks wondering how to balance client work and professional development.
